Psychotherapist/Counsellor

Hi, I’m Darrel, a pluralistic counsellor offering in-person sessions at Chapter House, or online/phone sessions for remote support. My approach is supportive, adaptable, and centered around you as an individual. I listen, ask questions, and gently challenge when needed to help you understand what's going on and make sense of your challenges. We might explore your past to understand how it’s shaped you, notice patterns in relationships or things you struggle with, look at what’s happening now, and identify where change might help, or focus on the future and how to move forward positively. Therapy with me is about building a strong, collaborative relationship where we can explore what's going on in your life and help you move forward in a positive way.

Sessions are:

£65 face-to-face at Chapter House (50 mins)

£55 online or by phone

I also offer a free 30-minute call (via Google Meet or phone), where you can ask questions and get a feel for whether I’m the right person for you, which I believe is one of the most important parts of starting therapy.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before getting in touch, if something’s not sitting right, that’s a good enough place to start.

Experience:

Before becoming a counsellor, I spent many years supporting people in a variety of roles, all of which influence the way I work today.

Earlier in my career, I worked in the business world, developing teams, managing people, hitting targets, and dealing with the pressures that come with responsibility. I’ve run my own business and mentored others along the way. I understand the weight of stress, self-doubt, and burnout that can come with leadership and trying to keep everything going.

I’ve also spent nearly a decade as a school governor, delivered careers guidance, mentored students, and was a foster carer for several years with Kent Fostering, offering support and stability to young people during challenging times.

Today, alongside my private practice, I work in further education as a Mental Health and Counselling Coordinator. My role involves helping students access the right support, overseeing trainee counsellors, and working collaboratively with safeguarding and wellbeing teams across college sites.

I bring not just professional experience, but personal insight too. I understand what it’s like to juggle life as a parent, a partner, a business owner, and someone who’s lived through difficult and life-changing events. I’ve faced personal losses, experienced the impact of serious illness within my family, and know how painful and complex grief, identity, and emotional overwhelm can be.

In private practice, I work with both adults and young people who are facing a wide range of challenges, from anxiety and low self-esteem to grief, burnout, life transitions and relationship issues. These experiences continue to shape my work and deepen my understanding of how different people engage with therapy, whether they arrive with clear goals or are simply trying to make sense of how they’re feeling.
